Right now, there is a shortage of 14 drivers from the budgeted strength of 72 street maintenance workers. Snowplow drivers play a crucial role in ensuring roads are clear during snowfalls, covering 1,400 lane miles for morning and afternoon rush hours.

The position offers more than just snow removal duties. It provides year-round employment with various tasks. "It's a fun job. You're doing something different all the time," says Highway Superintendent Ted Dunkmann. "Every day's different. You might be paving one day and trimming back brush the next and repairing a storm sewer the next day. It's not like you're always stuck doing the same thing all the time."

Candidates ideally should have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and some road construction experience. "People with experience snowplowing are also good," Dunkmann adds.

The starting pay for those without experience or a CDL is $18.25 per hour, with CDL training provided and opportunities for advancement available. Applicants possessing a Class-A CDL and some construction experience could start at $22.68 per hour, according to Dunkmann.
