Detective Samantha Brown employs a technique reminiscent of the fictional detective Columbo by allowing suspects to underestimate her, which often leads them to reveal information inadvertently. In her two years in the detective bureau, she has been instrumental in solving property crimes and cases involving women and children.
Brown is part of a 12-member team praised for its effectiveness. As the department nears its 10-year anniversary, Chief Kurt Frisz commends the detective bureau: “I would put our detective bureau right up there with the best of the best,” he states. The team's accomplishments include solving 77% of crimes against persons in 2022 and 2023, and maintaining a high clearance rate this year.
Captain David Tiefenbrunn, Detective Bureau Commander, highlights their success: “It definitely reveals the work we do back here,” he says. Weekly meetings allow detectives to share ideas and collaborate on challenging cases. “A good detective has that inquiring mind that just really wants to follow through,” Tiefenbrunn adds.
Among notable detectives is Mike Cantillon, known as "Smokey," who successfully led an investigation into an international cock-fighting ring. His persistence was crucial in solving a robbery case involving $10,000 stolen from a vending machine company.
Detective Carl Cunningham attributes his success to his curiosity: “I’m a very nosy person,” he admits. He notes differences between St. Charles County Police and other departments due to lower violent crime rates.
Former Detective Mike Hoefle used his attention to detail to help solve a murder case by noticing connections between vehicles at crime scenes.
Veteran Detective Mike Yarbrough was respected for his work on financial crimes, while Ross Bishop was remembered for his humor and dedication before passing away shortly after retiring last year.
The bureau continues to evolve with new technology like drones while maintaining traditional skills like informant development. Tiefenbrunn acknowledges their commitment: “I have a great group of men and women who work diligently.” Chief Frisz adds, “Our detective bureau is so solid as a team.”
